Summary
Many American artists historically studied in Europe before pursuing their art careers back home. However, controversy surrounds whether three of the greatest American artists, who spent most of their lives in Europe, can be classified as American. James McNeill Whistler and John Singer Sargent set sail for Paris to study and pursue their careers, while Mary Cassatt became the most prominent woman painter among the Impressionists in Paris.
