Summary
An environmental group revealed that beach closures and advisories due to sewage-polluted waters nearly doubled in 2000 compared to the previous year, with 85 percent of the issues caused by elevated bacteria levels exceeding safety standards. Despite efforts by some states to expand monitoring programs and implement better beach monitoring and public notification, more than a third of the closures and advisories were linked to sewage or polluted runoff, leading to concerns about the pollution of U.S. waters for swimming, fishing, and supporting aquatic life.
