Summary
Before World War I, communal nudity was practiced by a dedicated minority in Germany. After the war, poverty forced many unemployed young people out of the cities and they resorted to communal bathing and abstinence from meat, tobacco, and alcohol. The practice of communal nudity reappeared in Germany after World War II, with the growth of naturist parks and beaches, especially in response to the influx of German naturist vacationers in Mediterranean countries.
