Summary
In 1913, during excavations at the cemetery of Tarkhan in Egypt, an extraordinary find was made within a pile of dirty linen - a well-preserved linen dress dating nearly 5,500 years old, making it the oldest clothing ever recovered. The search for evidence of ancient clothing also led to discoveries of textile fragments from Çatalhöyük in Turkey, fibers at Dzudzuana Cave in Georgia dating back to 30,000 years ago, and even older traces of clothing use from bone tools in South Africa. Furthermore, the divergence of head and body lice subspecies suggested that the use of clothing by Homo sapiens could date back as far as 170,000 years ago. The debate about whether Neanderthals also wore clothing has been fueled by evidence of possible Neanderthal clothing materials and their use for colder weather.
