Summary
In 1998, Florida voters passed an amendment to the state constitution implying equality for women before the law. However, the Fifth District Court of Appeals ruled that the amendment did not provide the same level of legal protection for women as it did for other categories such as race, national origin, and physical disability, resulting in the nullification of the state constitutional amendment and a lower legal standard for reviewing female rights in state courts.
