Summary
In the late 1800s, Florida was largely wilderness with minimal human settlement. The United States Post Office created a mail route along the coast, known as the "barefoot" mail route, due to the rough terrain and lack of roads. The mail carriers, including the most famous one named James Hamilton, delivered mail by rowing boats and walking long distances along the coast, a journey filled with obstacles and danger.
