Summary
A campaign for Mother's Day as a national holiday started in 1908, inspired by a Mother's Friendship Day organized by Anna Jarvis's mother and the "Mother's Day Proclamation" by suffragette Julia Ward Howe. Following President Woodrow Wilson's official establishment of Mother's Day in 1914, commercialization upset Jarvis, who intended it as a personal celebration honoring individual mothers.
