Summary

In 1905, George attends a service and later discovers that the bulky man who was sitting behind him is his college tutor, Arthur Benson. Throughout his four years at Cambridge, George encounters famous individuals, embraces radical ideas, and develops his essay writing skills. His relationship with Benson deepens, but George discovers a disturbing personal agenda Benson has for him, though he handles the situation and gains control. Benson's own troubles lead to a breakdown, and George supports and visits him. Subsequently, George climbs in North Wales and the Lake District, achieving notable feats while contending with family drama and personal dilemmas.
