Summary
George Mallory faces conflicts when he returns to Charterhouse in September 1911. The school's new headmaster, Frank Fletcher, creates tension with his strict attitude, causing George to dislike the school's environment. Despite his reservations about the school, George remains true to his ideal of a teacher by holding play readings, participating in school debates, and giving individual attention to his students. He also becomes involved in social and literary activities, takes up writing, and submits a manuscript for publication. Additionally, he embarks on climbing trips, helps a friend during a period of financial struggle, and establishes new friendships in various social circles.
